CCDHS netters open seasons with losses

T he Custer County District High School tennis teams opened their seasons in Billings on Saturday, taking on Class AA schools Billings West and Billings Senior.

The Cowgirls lost both matches, 5-3 to West and 6-2 to Senior, while the Cowboys were swept 8-0 to each school.

“It was really nice to get out and see some competition,” CCDHS Head Coach Bob Holland said. “I was pleasantly pleased, especially with the girls getting some wins. We knew we were young and green and that’s a big step for those kids. Some of the boys had never played tennis before two weeks ago, so it was tough for some of them. But we made some improvement. I thought it was great to open with the AA schools. It was great experience for us.”

The Cowgirls earned all five of their wins in doubles action.

Against West, the team of Teyha Regalado and Morgan Lovec beat Sara Scheie and Vanessa Loveless 6-1, 6-4. Sydney Anderson and Hallie Banta beat Madi Schallenkamp and Brooke Butler 6-1, 6-3 and Alyssa Lohrke and Mariah Beehler swept Addie Sternad and Allison Kustka 6-0, 6-0.

Lovec teamed up with Michelle Bradford to beat Isabella Whitworth and Rachael Eaton of Billings Senior 6-3, 4-6, 7-5. Lohrke and Beehler handled April Zimmerman and Emma Graves, 6-1, 6-1.

“That was the first time they had all played together,” Holland said. “The younger kids all got wins and I was pleased with that.”

The Cowboys showed their youth and inexperience, not winning a game in their 16 matches on the day. The Cowboys have just one upperclassmen with any varsity experience.

“For the boys, it was a learning experience,” Holland said. “The boys that played one and two, we played them in singles against West and doubles against Senior. And the fact that they went 6-3 and led in that set against Senior was a good step. You could see them stepping up against an experienced team.”

The Cowgirls will be at home on Tuesday when they host Baker, starting at 2 p.m. The Cowgirls will likely be without senior Shaylee Singleton again this week. Singleton is recovering from an ankle injury. Both squads will be at Hardin on Friday and Saturday.
