Cowgirl softball starts season with 7-2 loss to BC

The Custer County District High School Cowgirl softball team finally got on the field, opening their season on Saturday afternoon against Billings Central.

And while the Cowgirls lost the season-opener 7-2, it was mostly good to just get on the field.

The Cowgirls are 0-1 on the year. They will be on the road Tuesday evening when they travel to Glendive for another Eastern A matchup. They will make their home debut on Thursday evening against Glasgow.

“It was great to get outside,” Cowgirls Head Coach Murrey Selk said. “We needed to get outside. We’ve been stuck inside, so it was great to get outside and have some competition.”

On Saturday, the Cowgirls took an early 1-0 lead in the top of the first when Lauren Wolfe-Petroff got on, stole two bases and then later scored. That 1-0 lead held until the bottom of the second when Central got a two-run triple from Morgan Smith. Smith scored on the play when the Cowgirls throw went out-of-bounds.

Each team scored single runs in the third inning and the Lady Rams (1-1, 1-0) put the game away with three runs in the fourth.

The Cowgirls finished with six hits, but struck out 16 times on the game. Gabby Richards was 2-4 with an RBI to lead the Cowgirl offense. Lauren Wolfe-Petroff, Mackenzie Helland, Chelsea Davis and Jenna Swope each had base hits.

“For the opener, I thought we did really well,” Selk said. “We made some mistakes. We had four errors, which makes things tough. But we did pretty well. We got the bat on the ball and executed, but we have a lot of work to do. We have a lot of season left to get everything firing.”
