Cowgirls bounce back to get weekend split

The Custer County District High School Cowgirl basketball team picked up a split of their two games over the weekend. They lost to Class AA Billings Senior on the road Friday night 73-42, but bounced back to beat Glendive in an Eastern A contest on Saturday night 52-36.

With the split, the Cowgirls moved to 7-6 overall on the season and 5-2 in the Eastern A. They have won five of their last six games.

On Friday night, the Cowgirls suffered through a brutal second quarter in their loss against the fifth-ranked AA team in the state.

The Cowgirls trailed 13-10 after the first quarter, but then Senior (9-3) outscored them 20-2 in the second quarter to pull away early.

“Senior is big and athletic,” Cowgirls Head Coach Jacqui Engstrom said. “Not only do they have big girls on the inside, they also have shooters. We played them tough for three quarters, but got ourselves in a rut in the second quarter and weren’t able to recover from it.”

Beth Sutter was the lone Cowgirl to reach double figures, leading the team with 10 points. Ashlie Larson and Halie Warren each had seven points.

At home on Saturday night, the Cowgirls played much better, bit it took them some time to shake the pesky Lady Red Devils.

“It took us awhile to get going,” Engstrom said. “Coming out strong is definitely something we need to continue to work on.”

The Cowgirls never trailed in the ball game and looked to put the Lady Red Devils away early. Following baskets from Sutter and Amy Blaquiere, and a free throw for Blaquiere, the Cowgirls held a 13-4 lead midway through the first quarter.

But Glendive (3-10, 0-6) rallied to cut the score to 15-12 at the end of the first quarter and got as close as 17-16 early in the second. The Cowgirls managed to go into halftime with a 23-20 lead.

That lead bulged to seven early in the third quarter on baskets from Shaylee Singleton and Warren. But Glendive scored the next six points to cut the score to 27-26. Singleton and Larson answered with a pair of baskets at the end of the period to push the Cowgirls lead to 31-26 going into the fourth quarter.

Early in the fourth, the Lady Red Devils shrank the lead to three on two occasions, but then the Cowgirls found their groove.

A basket from Tori Swope at the 6:13 mark sparked a 13-1 run by the Cowgirls that essentially put the game out of reach.

After scoring just 31 points in the first three quarters, the Cowgirls scored 21 in the fourth quarter.

“We struggled with (Maria) Zimdars in the first half,” Engstrom said. “But the girls made some adjustments in the second half and really went to work shutting her down.”

Zimdars finished with 20 of Glendive’s 36 points, 14 of those came in the first half.

The Cowgirl defense was fantastic, holding Glendive to 23 percent shooting and forcing 16 turnovers. Offensively, the Cowgirls turned the ball over just 10 times on the game.

Larson led the Cowgirls ith 13 points. Sutter and Jenna Swope each had 10 points and Singleton added eight.

The Cowgirls have a huge weekend ahead of them. They will be at Laurel (12-2, 6-1) on Friday night and will host Billings Central (10-3, 5-1) on Saturday at 5:45 p.m. Those teams each beat the Cowgirls earlier this season.

“When this group of Cowgirls decides it is time to play, there is no stopping them,” Engstrom said. “They work great together, they are continuing to improve and they work hard. There is no other team in the Eastern A with the kind of depth and unity this Cowgirl team has.”

Cowgirl JV and Frosh each earn splits

The Cowgirl JV and freshmen teams had the same results on teh weekend as the varsity. Both younger teams lost to Senior, but came back to beat Glendive.

The Cowgirl JV lost to Billings Senior 58-34 and beat Glendive 63-25. They are now 9-4 on the season.

The Cowgirl frosh lost to Senior 37-28 and beat Glendive 52-26.

On Friday night, the Cowgirl JV fell behind 19-11 after the first quarter and trailed 35-16 at halftime and were never able to recover. Tori Ogolin had nine points and Hadleigh Miller added eight to lead the Cowgirls.

On Saturday night, the Cowgirl JV had a great defensive effort in their blowout of Glendive.

The Cowgirl JV held Glendive to just 15 percent shooting on the night and forced 30 turnovers. Abbie Larson had a big game with 17 points to lead the Cowgirl JV. Jaylen Henderson and Ogolin each added 13.

For the freshmen on Friday night, it was the second half that proved costly. They took a 20-14 lead into halftime, but were outscored 23-8 in the second half. Ally Coleman had a good night with 11 points to lead the Cowgirl frosh.

On Saturday night, the Cowgirl frosh came out strong and never let up against Glendive. They led 16-6 after the first quarter and 31-14 at halftime. In the third, they outscored the Lady Red Devils 19-2 to put the game well out of reach.

Madi Hill had a great game for the Cowgirls. She had 28 points on 9-10 shooting from the field, grabbed seven rebounds and had nine steals.
