District 6 sends three teams into Southern C semifinals

 

The District 6C showed their strength yesterday in the first-round of the Southern C Divisional Tournament at the Custer County District High School gym.

Three teams from the District 6C advanced to the semifinals with wins yesterday, while the District 4C will only have Jordan playing in the semifinals.

Harlowton-Ryegate beat Terry 59-36 in the first game of the tournament and will play Park City in the semifinals tonight at 6:30 p.m. Park City topped Northern Cheyenne 40-30 in the first-round.

Jordan beat Absarokee 58-42 to advance to the semifinals tonight at 8 p.m., against Broadview-Lavina who beat Broadus 55-45 last night.

Terry and Northern Cheyenne played in a loser-out contest at 1:30 p.m., and Broadus and Absarokee played at 3 p.m.

Harlowton-Ryegate 59,  Terry 36

The Harlowton-Ryegate Lady Engineers got a big night from Makenzie Wasson and cruised to their 22nd straight win.

The Lady Engineers got off to a good start, leading Terry 21-10 after the first quarter. That lead grew to 36-21 at halftime and then 52-27 going into the fourth.

The Lady Engineers used their suffocating defense to hold Terry to 23 percent shooting on the game and forced 21 turnovers.

Wasson had 22 points and eight rebounds to lead the Lady Engineers (22-0). Kinsey Schwers added 14 points and nine rebounds. Kaitlin Lane chipped in with eight points.

Terry (11-11) was led by Lexie Schlosser with 20 points. Valerie Greenfield added seven points.

Park City 40, Northern Cheyenne 30

The Park City Lady Panthers broke open a close game in the fourth quarter to pull away with the 40-30 win in the first-round.

Going into the fourth quarter, the Lady Panthers (17-6) held a slight 29-27 lead over the Lady Eagles. But Park City outscored Northern Cheyenne 11-3 in the fourth to advance to the semifinals.

Park City had a fantastic defensive effort, holding Northern Cheyenne to just 19 percent shooting. They were an efficient 35 percent shooting, helping them to overcome 25 turnovers.

Morgan Popp was 7-9 from the field and finished with 15 points and six rebounds. Brianna Gray had 10 points and four steals for the Lady Panthers.

Northern Cheyenne (11-9) got 11 points and eight rebounds from Tionne Carlson.

Jordan 58, Absarokee 42

The 4C champions held their ground, getting off to a fast start that carried them to the win.

Jordan (19-3) outscored Absarokee 13-4 in the first quarter and cruised from there for the win.

Jordan shot 43 percent from the field in the game, while holding Absarokee to just 27 percent shooting.

Carrie Murnion had a double-double to lead Jordan, she finished with 13 points and 10 rebounds. Charlie Saylor led the team with 15 points and Olivia FitzGerald also grabbed 10 rebounds.

Absarokee (10-13) got double-doubles from Emma Chandler and Haley Fallang. Chandler had 14 points and 13 rebounds, Fallang had 10 and 11.

Broadview-Lavina 55, Broadus 45

A strong second-half carried the Broadview-Lavina Lady Pirates to the 55-45 win over Broadus in the final game of the day.

Broadus led 29-26 at halftime, shooting 40 percent from the field in the first half. The Lady Pirates shot just 28 percent from the field in the first half, but got better in the second half.

The Lady Pirates (19-3) took control of the game in the third quarter, outscoring Broadus 13-7 to take a 39-36 lead going into the fourth. In the fourth, they outscored the Lady Hawks 16-9 to pull away with the win.

Defensively, the Lady Pirates held Broadus to 35 percent shooting for the game and forced 27 turnovers.

Alexi Payne had 14 points and 11 rebounds to lead the Lady Pirates. Krista Schott had 15 points to lead the team in scoring. Abby Bymaster added eight points.

For Broadus (15-7), Taylor Priced had 18 points and eight rebounds to lead the team. Amanda Gaskill had nine points and 12 rebounds.
