Golf: MCC men 5th at Medora

The Miles Community College men’s and women’s golf team faced a cold and windy course in Medora, North Dakota, at the Dickinson State University Blue Hawk Invitational on April 9-10.

The weather affected scores the first day, with just two players in the entire tournament finishing below the 10-over par mark at the Bully Pulpit Course.

Day two saw less wind, and scores ranged closer to par. The MCC men averaged 94 on Sunday and dropped to 90 on Monday on the par-72 course.

Caleb Bates carded a 93 on Sunday and an 81 on Monday for a total of 174, 30 over par and in a tie for 27th place. KC Smith had a two-day total of 179, 35 over par, that put him in a tie for 29th place.

Also for MCC Jaxson Archibald landed a 31st-place finish at 36 over par, Cory Valenzano was 32nd at 37 over, and Chayton Petersen, the Pioneers’ sole sophomore, placed 34th at 63 over.

Riley Shipp finished in the 18th spot in the women’s standings, shooting a 115 on Sunday and a 119 on Monday, with Bailey Bice right behind in 19th place. Bice carded a 119 on day one and 116 on day two.

The Miles men finished in fifth place at 138 over, with the University of Jamestown taking the tournament crown at 53 over par. The MCC women compete only as individuals.

“The weather was awful,” said Pioneer head coach Chase Tait. “Winds of more than 30 mph on Sunday, and we teed off at 30 degrees on Monday, and it didn’t get above 45 degrees.”

The Pioneers tee off at the Rocky Mountain College Battlin’ Bears Invitational beginning April 23 for their final regular-season tournament.
