Happy Birthday: VFW celebrates 85th
The James T. Flinn Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 1579 celebrated its 85th anniversary in Miles City with an Armed Forces Appreciation Dinner and Dance on Saturday afternoon and evening.
A free ham and roast beef dinner with all the trimmings was served at the VFW Hall located at 119 S. Sixth St. on Saturday afternoon.
“We fed around 200 people during the dinner,” said Jody Sept, bookkeeper for the post and coordinator of the event. Sept said the dinner was open to veterans, all service members and their families.
“We had a lot more than 200 for the dance in the evening,” she added. Music for the dance was provided by The Yellowstone Drifters.
A gun fundraiser was also held by the post and the winner of the rifle, whose name was drawn Saturday, was Jerry Schlepp of Miles City. Sept said that many door prizes also were awarded during the dinner and dance, adding that “lots of T-shirts, pins, key chains and a blanket were given away.”
According to Sept, the local VFW post was chartered on Feb. 13, 1932.
“We’d like to keep this event going and make it an annual celebration,” added Sept. “We want to give back to our community.”
