Lady Longhorns sweep Chinook, fall to Gardiner

The Wibaux Lady Longhorns earned a dominant sweep over Chinook in the first round of the Class C State Tournament in Bozeman yesterday, but suffered the same fate at the hands of Gardiner in the quarterfinals.

Facing a fired up Chinook team, led by 6’1” senior Makhayla Farmer, the Lady Longhorns fell behind in a big way to start their state tournament.

Led by Farmer, Chinook jumped out to a 14-2 lead and looked like they were going to cruise to a big win in the first game.

But, Wibaux rattled off 14 of the next 15 points to tie the score at 15. Chinook maintained their lead, but with the momentum clearly on their side, the Lady Longhorns eventually took their first lead of the game at 19-18.

Wibaux never led by more than two points in the game, but led by two at the most important spot, 25-23.

In the second game, Wibaux took control early and never trailed after taking a 3-2 lead.

The Lady Longhorns led by as many as eight, 21-13, after a Lexi Begger kill. But Chinook didn’t go quietly, chipping away at the lead and with an ace from Emily Dennis, they had cut the score to 23-22.

Wibaux responded with kills from Chelsea Leach and Hannah Bakken to secure the victory.

Game three was close to start, with Wibaux holding a 9-7 lead after 16 serves. But from there, they outscored Chinook 16-3 to run away with the 25-10 win.

Leach and Begger had big games for the Lady Longhorns. Leach led the team with 11 kills and two blocks. She also had 11 digs. Begger also had two blocks and finished with 10 kills.

Sydney Schieffer had 27 assists, while Bakken led the team with three aces. Bakken and Skylar Stenson each had 12 digs.

Farmer finished the game with 14 kills and six blocks to lead Chinook.

With the win, the Lady Longhorns advanced to the quarterfinals where they ran into a buzzsaw in the form of Gardiner junior Hannah Dean.

The 6’1” Dean helped keep the Lady Bruins undefeated, sweeping the Lady Longhonrs 25-13, 25-14 and 25-13.

As a team, the Lady Longhorns had 19 kills. Dean had 20 herself and also served four aces.

Leach had a solid game with 10 kills, while Begger had two blocks and four kills. Schieffer had all 16 assists and Bakken had 13 digs to lead the defense.

With the loss, the Lady Longhorns will face a loser-out game against the winner of Winnett-Grass Range and Manhattan Christian today at 4 p.m.
