The Jordan Lady Mustangs pulled off the biggest upset of the Class C State Tournament, but couldn’t carry the magic into their quarterfinal match.

In the first round, the Lady Mustangs faced undefeated Winnett-Grass Range, but were unfazed and won the match in five games. In the quarterfinals, they faced another undefeated team in Belt and were swept by the Lady Huskies.

The Lady Mustangs needed five games to beat the Lady Rangers, but were more than happy with the extra play.

In the first game, Jordan showed they weren’t intimidated by the undefeated record. They led as late as 14-13 and were as close as two points at 22-20. The Lady Rangers pulled out the win in the first game, 25-21.

In game two, the Lady Mustangs took the lead for good at 7-6 on a Charlie Saylor kill. They broke the game open late, ending the game on a 9-1 run to take the 25-11 win.

Game three was another close one, with the Lady Rangers pulling away with the 25-19 win. The six-point spread was the biggest lead of the game for either team.

Facing the loss, the Lady Mustangs fell behind by as many as eight, 15-7. The Lady Rangers looked as they’d maintain their undefeated mark, building a 20-14 lead.

Jordan cut away at the lead and after a pair of Arielle Billing kills, they were within two, 21-19. A Shanae Phipps kill brought them to 21-20 and Billing came through with two more consecutive kills to tie the score at 21 and give the Lady Mustangs a 22-21 lead.

The Lady Rangers tied the score at 22 and again at 23, but two straight hitting errors by the Lady Rangers gave Jordan the improbable win in set four.

In the fifth and deciding set, the Lady Mustangs ran out to a huge early lead and nearly gave it all away.

Taking advantage of multiple errors, the Lady Mustangs opened the fifth game on an 8-1 run. Winnett-Grass Range never panicked and steadily cut away at the lead, eventually tying the game at 12 and taking a 13-12 lead.

Jordan tied the game at 13 and another error by the Lady Rangers gave them match point. Billing put the match away with her 20th kill of the match.

Jordan had 41 kills as a team, led by Billing with 20 and Saylor with 12. Shavon Phipps had 26 of the 40 assists. The team had an amazing 33 blocks, led by Carrie Murnion with 13, Olivia Fitzgerald with 11 and Saylor with nine.

Fitzgerald and Saylor led the back-row defense with 21 and 17 digs, respectively.

With the win, the Lady Mustangs advanced to the quarterfinals where they ran into undefeated Belt.

In the first game, the Lady Mustangs held a 9-8 lead. But, Belt ran of 17 points in the next 22 serves to run away with the 25-13 win.

Jordan again played well early in the second game, leading by as many as six, 13-6. But, Belt again proved to be too much and led by as many as five and pulled away for the 25-21 win.

The story was the same in the third game, Jordan played well and trailed 12-10 midway through the game, but Belt was too strong and ran off with the 25-16 win.

The Lady Mustangs had just 11 kills in the match, getting most of their points on blocking the strong Belt hitters. Jordan had 17 blocks, led by eight from Murnion and four each from Saylor and Fitzgerald.

Katie Fertterer and Kara Gerke led the strong Belt hitters with 15 and 12 kills, respectively.

The Lady Mustangs will take on the winner of Chinook and Bridger at 2 p.m., today.
