Local man commits suicide in jail

A local man was found hanging at the former Custer County Detention Center Saturday and died Sunday at Holy Rosary Healthcare.

According to a press release from Custer County Sheriff Tony Harbaugh, 40-year-old William “Bill” Plowman was arrested Friday on a charge of partner/family member assault.

Following his arrest, Plowman was ordered held in the holding area of the former Custer County Detention Center until he could see a judge and bail was set.

Shortly after 4 p.m. Saturday, the detention staff discovered him unconscious in his cell, where he had attempted to hang himself.

Staff began immediate efforts to resuscitate him, and he was transported by ambulance to Holy Rosary.

A coroner’s inquest will be held at a later date.
