MCC men split, women drop both at Pioneer Club tourney
The Miles Community College basketball teams had a long weekend, hosting the Pioneer Club Tournament right after playing their first Region IX games on Thursday.
The Pioneers split their tournament games, beating Lake Region 92-80 and falling to Williston State 78-71. They are now 4-5 on the season.
“I think it was a good and not so good weekend,” Pioneers Head Coach Chase Tait said. “I thought we improved on some of the things we’ve been trying to improve on. I thought we got better over the weekend. The wins and losses don’t show it, but playing three good teams I thought we competed at a high level. We just have to do a better job of finishing off games. I thought we competed and played really hard. We did a lot of good things. Unfortunately, your reward isn’t what you want it to be. Looking back on things, I thought we played better than we had been. Hopefully we keep improving as time goes on.”
For the Lady Pioneers, they dropped both of their games this weekend. They lost 73-46 to Lake Region and 72-59 to Williston State. Earlier in the season, Williston beat them 79-32. MCC fell to 6-3 on the year.
“Our girls played really hard,” Lady Pioneers Head Coach Liz Lewis said. “We’re still learning, but we played hard. We’re going to watch film, learn a few things and get better. It was good to see us improve and make better decisions. But we still need to knock down shots.”
Both MCC teams will be in Pablo, Mont., this weekend where they will play Salish-Kootenai College on Friday and the University of Great Falls JV on Saturday.
In their first game on the weekend, the Pioneers put together their best offensive game of the season in the 92-80 win over Lake Region.
The Pioneers built a 52-42 lead at halftime thanks to 42 percent shooting from the field and 43 percent shooting from three-point range.
They cooled off a bit in the second half, shooting 34 percent from the field and 14 percent from long range. They were 27 of 42 from the free throw line in the game.
Ryan McCarty and Tyree King had their best games of the season. McCarty finished with 27 points and was 9-10 from the free throw line. King had 16 points and sished out six asists.
Jonathan Dogbo had 13 points and 10 rebounds, while Quinn SMith had 10 points, eight boards and four blocks. Teslim Idris and LaSalle Massey each had nine points. Idris grabbed 10 rebounds.
On Saturday night, the Pioneers led 35-34 at halftime, but couldn’t slow down a Williston team that shot 47 percent from the field in the second half.
MCC had turnover issues, turning it over 23 times but they did hold a 52-30 edge in rebounds.
Dogbo had 23 points and was the only Pioneer to finish in double figures. King had eight points, while four others had seven. Emmanuel Olufemi led the team with 11 rebounds and three blocked shots.
Poor shooting plagued the Lady Pioneers in both of their losses.
On Friday night, the Lady Pioneers shot 24 percent from the field for the game and were just 5-20 from three-point range.
Saturday night wasn’t much better as they shot 32 percent from the field and 7-32 from long range.
Against Lake Region, the Lady Pioneers could not overcome 22 turnovers and were out-rebounded 50-41. Tess Blaquiere was the only Lady Pioneer in double figures with 14 points and she also grabbed nine rebounds. Jaycin Tini had seven points.
On Saturday night, Petra Lumpert had a double-double, while Blaquiere and Tini nearly did. Lumpert scored 14 opints and had 10 rebounds, while Tini and Blaquiere had 15 and 12 points, respectively. Both Tini and Blaquiere had nine rebounds.
