MCC teams each earn splits before break


The Miles Community College basketball teams ended the 2013 portion of their seasons with splits at the Northwest College Tournament in Powell, Wyo., last weekend.

The Pioneers beat the Colorado Kings, an all-star team, 104-94 and then lost to Laramie County 89-84. The Lady Pioneers beat the Northwest All-Stars 85-59 and then lost to the Wyo-Mont All-Stars 68-65.

The Pioneers are 8-7 on the season and the Lady Pioneers are now 9-6. Both teams are off for the Christmas break and will return with a road game at Gillette College on January 4th. They will be at home on January 7th against Williston State.

Pioneers 104, Kings 94

The Pioneers cracked the century mark for the first time this season in an offensive-heavy contest against the Colorado Kings.

The Pioneers shot 58 percent from the field, including 10-23 from three-point range and turned the ball over just 10 times.

LaSalle Massey and Conner Smyle went for 26 and 20 points, respectively, to lead six Pioneers in double figures. Teslim Idris had 15, Ryan McCarty had 13, Quinn Smith finished with 12 and Jonathan Dogbo ended with 10.

Idris grabbed nine rebounds to lead the Pioneers.

Laramie County 89, Pioneers 84

The Pioneers had a solid offensive game, but couldn’t overcome 21 turnovers in their five-point loss.

MCC led 41-40 at halftime, but were outscored 49-43 in the second half.

The Pioneers shot 55 percent from the field and were 12-17 from the line. But Laramie County forced 21 turnovers and were 22-32 from the line to even things out.

Dogbo led six Pioneers in double figures with 16 points. Smith, Tyree King, Smyle and McCarty each had 11 and Idris chipped in with 10.

Lady Pioneers 85,              NW All-Stars 59

The Lady Pioneers had a fantastic first half and carried that into the second half of their big win over the Northwest College All-Stars.

The Lady Pioneers shot 61 percent from the field in the first half, building a 45-25 lead at halftime. In the second half, their defense held the All-Stars to 28 percent shooting and ran away with a 40-25 second half.

Tess Blaquiere had a fantastic game for the Lady Pioneers. She was 9-12 from the field and finished with 24 points and led the team with seven rebounds. Ashley hildreth came off the bench to score 12 points and Jaycin Tini added 10. Savanah Robinson and Shelby Weeks each had nine points in the win.

WY-MT All-Stars 68,      Lady Pioneers 65

The Lady Pioneers second half comeback bid came up just short against the Wyoming-Montana All-Stars.

The All-Stars jumped out to a 44-29 lead at halftime thanks to 52 percent shooting from the field and 10-13 shooting from the line in the first half.

In the second half, the Lady Pioneers shot just 35 percent from the field, but stiffened their defense and out-scored the All-Stars 36-24.

Tini had a double-double with 13 points and 12 rebounds to lead the Lady Pioneers. Blaquiere and Petra Lumpert each had 12 points and Hildreth finished with 11.
