The MIles Community College basketball teams traveled to Williston, N.D., last weekend for a pair of games, with each team beating United Tribes and both MCC teams falling to Williston State.

The Pioneers are now 2-2 on the season and the Lady Pioneers are 3-1. They will be in Bismarck, N.D., for a tournament this weekend.

The MCC teams will be at home for three straight nights, hosting Central Wyoming, Lake Region and Williston State on Nov. 21-23.

Pioneers 84, Tribes 76

The Pioneers didn’t play well, but picked up their game when they needed to in order to get the win.

“We didn’t come ready to play,” Pioneers Head Coach Chase Tait said. “We lacked energy and I think we overlooked them. We played well in the last 10 minutes to get the win. Manny Olufemi had a great coming out party.”

The Pioneers trailed for much of the second half until Olufemi threw down a dunk to give the Pioneers a 66-65 lead with just over eight minutes to play. From there, the Pioneers pulled away with the win.

MCC shot 56 percent from the field in the win and held a 41-27 edge in rebounds. They also had 14 assists as a team.

Teslim Idris led the team with 21 points and Jonathan Dogbo had a double-double with 18 points and 11 rebounds. Olufemi finished with 11 points and six blocked shots. Ryan McCarty dished out seven assists.

The Pioneers couldn’t overcome 23 turnovers and a hot shooting Williston State team that hit 12 three-pointers.

“Williston State is a very good team,” Tait said. “They shot the ball very well against us, but we turned it over too much and just could not make a run.”

The Pioneers played well in the second half, shooting 52 percent from the field, but couldn’t overcome an 18-point deficit at halftime.

McCarty had a good night, leading the Pioneers with 22 points. Dogbo added 11 points and eight rebounds.

Lady Pioneers 88,     Tribes 51

The Lady Pioneers shot 52 percent from the field in the first half and ran out to a 49-25 lead at the break.

“It was a good game, got a chance to work on things,” Lady Pioneers Head Coach Liz Lewis said. “It was a good opportunity for us.”

Defensively, the Lady Pioneers had a great game. They held Tribes to 35 percent shooting and forced 27 turnovers.

Jaycin Tini had a great night for the Lady Pioneers, scoring 27 points and grabbing nine rebounds. Ashley Malmquist had 15 points, Petra Lumpert had 13 and Shelby Weeks had 12. MCC finished with 18 assists, led by Lumpert with seven.

Facing a very good Williston State team, the Lady Pioneers had a hard time scoring points.

“It was good to see the competition,” Lewis said. “We have some things to work on and get better at. We weren’t mentally ready to play that day.”

The Lady Pioneers shot just 15 percent from the field in the first half and trailed 36-15 at the break. For the game, they shot 20 percent from the field. The Lady Pioneers had six three-pointers and just five buckets from inside the arc.

Tess Blaquiere had 14 points and Tini had nine to lead the Lady Pioneers. Blaquiere grabbed nine rebounds.
