Ernest R. “Ernie” Schmitt, 85, of Fromberg, died Wednesday, Dec. 18, 2013, at Billings Clinic Comfort Care.
Mr. Schmitt was born in Miles City to Michael and Katherine Hjorth Schmitt on May 29, 1928. He spent his first years on the Meredith Community homestead and attended early grade school years there. He graduated from Custer County High School in Miles City, going on to Montana State University in Bozeman.
Following college, he went to work for the Agricultural Stabilization and Conservation Service (ASCS), becoming a field representative at the state level.
After an early retirement, he spent winters in Texas and Arizona. He also later traveled abroad until settling permanently in Fromberg, until recently moving to Aspen Meadows Assisted Living in Billings where he was kindly and compassionately cared for until being hospitalized at Billings Clinic where he also received the same compassionated care.
Mr. Schmitt is survived by a nephew, Claude (Karen) Adamson of Glendive and numerous other nephews and nieces; also a close neighbor, Steve Schomer, who was a helping hand during Mr. Schmitt’s older years.
He was preceded in death by his parents, one infant sister, four older sisters and one brother.
Private family graveside services are planned.
