The Custer County District High School Cowboy basketball team dropped a 63-47 decision against a tough Class AA Billings West team on Friday night at home, but bounced back to beat Class B St. Labre on Saturday night in Ashland, 71-58.
The Cowboys are now 3-6 overall on the year and remain 1-4 in the Eastern A. They will travel to Hardin on Friday and will host Sidney on Saturday in a pair of Eastern A conference games.
On Friday night, West opened the game on a 10-2 run and led 15-4 before the Cowboys got going. Connor Torstenbo hit a pair of shots and Brac Warren scored to cut the score to 15-10. West would lead 17-10 at the quarter break.
West (7-2) led by as many as 14 in the second quarter, but the Cowboys continued to keep themselves in the game, trailing 38-28 at halftime.
The Cowboys got as close as eight on a couple occasions in the second half, but couldn’t overcome a hot shooting West team.
“We played pretty good,” Warren said. “They’re a good team. We had some mistakes, which will happen against a team like that. We turned the ball over too much, but it was a good game.”
The Cowboys shot 32 percent from the field, while West shot 50 percent.
Warren finished with 18 points and Brett Keith added 10.
On Saturday night, the Cowboys made the trip down to Ashland and found themselves down in the first half, but rolled in the second half for the 13 point win.
“At the beginning, we were lackadaisical on defense,” Warren said. “After half, we picked it up and started executing better. We took care of the boards and fast-break a lot better.”
St. Labre scored the first nine points of the game, but the Cowboys recovered and held a 17-16 late in the quarter after a Warren three-pointer. But the Braves answered with a three of their own to take a 19-17 lead at the break.
The Braves again scored the first nine points of the quarter, pushing their lead to as many as 11. The Cowboys recovered enough to go into halftime trailing 34-27.
Early in the third, the Cowboys trailed by 11, 40-29, before they got rolling.
The Cowboys went on a 16-2 run, highlighted by a Gavin Gundlach three that gave them their first lead since the first quarter.
St. Labre got as close as five in the fourth quarter, but the Cowboys cruised to the 71-58 win.
The Cowboys outscored the Braves 44-24 in the second half.
Gundlach led four Cowboys in double figures with 19 points. Warren finished with 17, followed by Keith with 14 and Timmy Regan with 10.
