May and June will be busy election months for the state of Montana, and the Miles City School District is no exception, as four seats on the Unified Board of Trustees will be open for election.
One rural seat and three city seats will be available. The four seats are currently held by board veterans, and each is expected to run for re-election. However, the board is encouraging anyone with an interest in serving on the board to file a Petition of Nomination. Those up for re-election include Bob Wagner, Garve Gierke and Monty Lesh on the Elementary Board and Don Hoffman as a rural trustee.
All seats are three-year terms except for Gierke’s, who took over as an interim trustee in May. His seat is a one-year term.
“That election will be May 6,” said Superintendent Keith Campbell. “Though the incumbents are probably running, we really do encourage community members who are interested in serving on the board to go through the application process.”
To qualify for a trustee position, applicants must 1) Be qualified to vote in the district; 2) Be a resident of the school district for at least one year. Any person who is a qualified voter of the District is legally qualified to become a trustee. Any 20 qualified electors (registered voters) may nominate as many trustee candidates as there are trustee positions subject to election at the ensuing election. The name of each person nominated for candidacy will be submitted to the District Clerk not less than 40 days before the regular school election day.
Candidates for trustee positions must file a Petition of Nomination, signed by 20 voters for the city seats and five for the rural seat, and an Oath of Candidacy by 4 p.m. on March 27. Petitions can be dropped off to Lenore Bricco at the Administration Office at 1604 Main St.
A newly elected trustee will take office as soon as the election results have been certified and the trustee has taken and subscribed to an oath that he/she will faithfully and impartially discharge the duties of the office to the best of his/her ability. The person will qualify by taking an oath of office administered by the county superintendent.
Also on the agenda of last week’s monthly meeting of the Board of Trustees was an update on the recent tournaments teams from Custer County District High School participated in. Campbell said he was proud of the manner in which the students represented themselves, their school and the community of Miles City.
“The way the athletes and fans carried themselves at these various tournaments was phenomenal. I was very impressed,” Campbell said. “It wasn’t that I was surprised by it, and it was just good to see. And it wasn’t just me, it seemed like everywhere I went I had a Metra employee or hotel staff or restaurant workers telling me how polite and courteous our kids were. When you’re the superintendent and you hear those things, it just makes you feel good about the young people in this community.”
Under staffing, new hires ratified in the Elementary School District include Mindy Ferson and Michael Mercado, both at Highland Park.
Resignations in the Elementary District include Bethany Jackson, One-on-One Special Ed Aide-Lincoln; Mike Patch-Assistant WMS football coach; and Abbey Klanke-One-on-One Special Ed Aide-Highland Park.
New hires to be ratified in the High School District include Denise Selk, substitute teacher. Resignations/Terminations in the High School District include Keely Woods, CCDHS Assistant Track Coach.
