After dropping two straight losses, the Custer County District High School Cowgirl softball team got back to their winning ways last night, beating Hardin 9-3.
“It’s very nice to get the win,” Cowgirls head coach Murrey Selk said. “Last week, we didn’t perform at the plate and then last night we had solid contact with the ball, and kept it away from the defense. And we ran the bases well, played good defense and pitched great.”
With the win, the Cowgirls moved back over .500 at 5-4 overall. They are now 5-3 in the Eastern A, a half game ahead of Laurel and Sidney for second place. The Cowgirls will be at the Glasgow Tournament this weekend. They will host Sidney in their home finale on Tuesday evening at 5 p.m.
Against Hardin last night, Cowgirl pitcher Lauren Wolfe-Petroff got off to a bit of a rocky start. After a pair of singles, Wolfe-Petroff hit a batter to load the bases. A single brought in the first run for Hardin and their second run scored on a passed ball.
Wolfe-Petroff worked out of the jam, and cruised from there.
The senior ended up with 10 strike outs on the day, scattering eight hits over seven innings of work.
The Cowgirl offense quickly got back in the game. Wolfe-Petroff led off the bottom of the first with a single, stole second and third and scored on a passed ball. Sierra Niedge followed with a single and scored the tying run on a Kristen Selk double.
The Cowgirls added two more in the second, two in the fourth, one in the fifth and two in the sixth to pull away for the win.
Offensively, Wolfe-Petroff was just as good as she was in the circle. She went 4-4 with an RBI, four runs scored and she equally the MHSA record of seven stolen bases.
“She was just on fire,” Selk said of his senior. “She got off to a rough start, but she came right back and controlled the batters. Then the girls work up and played good ball. Her performance in the circle was great, but her production at the plate and on the bases was insane. It was just great.”
Junior Sierra Niedge also had a great day at the plate, going 3-4 with an RBI and two runs scored. Gabby Richards was 2-4 with an RBI and Jenna Swope was 2-3 with a pair of doubles. Kristen Selk finished 1-4 with a pair of RBIs.
